Britain’s Andy Murray has been knocked out of Wimbledon in the second round by American John Isner.

The world number two was beaten in straight sets, 4 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (3-7) 6-4, in a match which lasted just over three hours.

It is the first time Murray has failed to make it to the third round at Wimbledon since he made his debut in 2005.

Isner, who is ranked 22nd in the world, will now face France’s Adrian Mannarino in the third round.

Murray had looked in suitable form in the first set, but could take none of his three break points and then lost the tie-break.

The Scot appeared to be struggling with his movement in the second set and was broken in the sixth game.

However, he broke back immediately and then held force a tie-break, which he lost 7-4.

Murray took an early break in the third set and appeared to be on course for victory, but Isner broke back and then held force a tie-break, which he won 7-2.

It is a disappointing result for Murray, who had been hoping to win his third Wimbledon title.

He will now turn his attention to the US Open, which begins in New York on 28 August.
