In the first game of their group stage campaign, Manchester United lost at home to Real Sociedad.

It was a night to forget for Manchester United as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Real Sociedad in their opening Europa League group stage game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side went into the match as favourites, but they were outplayed for large periods by their Spanish opponents.

Real Sociedad took the lead in the first half through a stunning strike from Adnan Januzaj, who was making his return to Old Trafford.

United equalised early in the second half through a penalty from Bruno Fernandes, but they could not find a winner and Sociedad restored their lead through a late goal from Mikel Oyarzabal.

The result means that the United are now under pressure to get results in their remaining two group games against AZ Alkmaar and Partizan Belgrade.

Solskjaer will hope for a much improved performance from his side when they return to Premier League action on Sunday against Liverpool.
