Manchester City has agreed a deal with Leeds United to sign midfielder Kalvin Phillips for £45 million, according to reports.
The England international will become the club’s second summer signing, following Nathan Ake from Bournemouth.
Phillips, who has been with Leeds since joining their academy in 2004, has been a key player for the Whites over the past few seasons, helping them win promotion to the Premier League in 2020.
The 25-year-old has made over 200 appearances for Leeds, scoring 11 goals, and has been capped by England at senior level.
City are said to have beaten several other clubs to the signing of Phillips, who will sign a five-year deal with the club.
The report comes from reputable journalist David Bornstein, who has close links to the club.
This is a huge signing for Manchester City, who has been linked with several midfielders this summer.
It is also an enormous coup for Leeds, who has kept hold of one of their best players despite interest from some of the biggest clubs in the country.
Phillips is a versatile midfielder who can play in several roles, and he will add some much-needed depth to City’s squad.
The fee is a club-record for Leeds, and it is believed that the Whites will use the money to reinvest in their squad.
This is a big moment for both clubs, and it will be interesting to see how Phillips develops at City under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City is looking to spend a huge amount of money on Premier League giants like Chelsea. It was reported that the club was trying to get the deal done with Chelsea for their left winger, Andre Silva. The Manchester club’s main rivals, Manchester United, don’t seem to be interested in the player, and the player has been reported to be keen to return to Chelsea as he has grown a little disenchanted with the Red Devils.
After getting a deal done with Barcelona, the English side pursued another target as another Brazilian left winger, Joao Cancelo. The Manchester club’s board members are believed to have agreed to let the midfielder join the club, and the deal has already been signed, but they still need to get the transfer across the line.
It was announced that the transfer fee for the Brazilian midfielder was around £35 million, and the Manchester clubs were now in negotiations with Leeds to sign him.
With the huge transfer of Cancelo, the only left wingers at Manchester City are Angelino, Danilo, Sterling, Leroy Sane, Leroy Sané, Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, and Kyle Walker.
Danilo and Leroy Sane are expected to be the first choice wings while Angelino is the number three and Kyle Walker is the backup. Leroy Sané has also been linked with a move to Tottenham, but his future looks uncertain as the German club wants to sell the player.
It is expected that if the Manchester clubs were to get the deal done with Leeds to sign Cancelo, they will then be able to negotiate the transfer of their target Joao Cancelo to the clubs.
Concerns about Manchester City spending money on players is understandable, but the club can afford it and the board members are prepared to put in the money. The club has a balance sheet of over £1 billion, so they will pay any transfer fees required for any player in the squad.
The only reason that the club cannot pay any transfer fees is that the players are being kept out of the squad. There are currently no signings as the club is busy negotiating the sale of Cancelo and transferring Joao.
If it is possible for the board members to sign any players for the squad, then the squad will be complete and ready to face Liverpool next month.
It is likely that the players will remain at the club and there will be a further announcement before the end of this week.
