Pierre Gasly Joins All-French Alpine Lineup With Esteban Ocon

Pierre Gasly will partner fellow Frenchman Esteban Ocon at the rebranded Alpine Formula 1 team in 2021, with Nyck de Vries continuing at AlphaTauri.

Gasly raced for Toro Rosso in 2019, scoring a shock victory at the Italian Grand Prix, but was dropped midway through last season in favour of Daniil Kvyat.

He subsequently regained his place at the team – now AlphaTauri – and has scored points in all but one of the 12 races so far this year, including a best finish of sixth in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Ocon, who made his F1 debut with Manor in 2016, spent two years with Force India and then Racing Point before taking a year out in 2019. He returned to the grid this season with Renault, scoring a best finish of seventh in the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

De Vries, meanwhile, joined AlphaTauri as reserve driver at the start of the 2020 season, having won the Formula 2 championship the year before. He has taken part in two Friday practice sessions so far this year.

Alpine – which is the new name for Renault’s works team – is yet to announce its full 2021 driver line-up, with current racers Ocon and Daniel Ricciardo both out of contract at the end of the season.

But it is understood that Ricciardo is close to signing a new two-year deal with the team, which would see his partner Gasly in what would be an all-French driver line-up.

De Vries is also understood to be in talks with Renault about a race seat for next year, but the team is leaning towards signing a more experienced driver as Ricciardo’s teammate.

Should De Vries miss out on a race seat, he is likely to remain at AlphaTauri as reserve driver and take part in Friday practice sessions.
