Serena Williams has cast doubt on Wimbledon’s future and called for more Grand Slam tournaments to be played on different surfaces.
The 23-time major winner, who is seeded second at this year’s tournament, has not played at the All England Club since winning the 2016 title.
And with the event due to be staged on the same surface as the French Open for the first time since 1974, Williams is unsure if it will return to grass.
“I don’t know. I hope so,” she said when asked if Wimbledon would definitely be around in 10 years’ time.
“I don’t know if it will be. It’s definitely on a decline. It would be sad to see it go.”
Williams also called for more variety in the Slam schedule, with the US Open currently the only event played on anything other than clay or grass.
“I think it would be really cool if we had, like, four Slams on each surface,” she said.
“That would be really cool for tennis, just to have that variety.
“But I don’t make the rules, so… ”
Wimbledon is due to switch to a Monday start from 2022, with the tournament set to be staged on the Middle Sunday for the first time in its history.
But Williams believes the event should remain on its traditional two-week schedule.
“I don’t like it,” she said of the proposed change.
“I don’t think it should be that way. I think it should stay the way it is.”
The 26-year-old also gave her thoughts on the new generation of players, including world number one Ash Barty and reigning French Open champion Simona Halep.
“They’re doing amazing,” she said.
“I think it’s so cool that we have so many winners now.
“It’s not always the same people. I think that’s really great for our sport.”
And she had high praise for 22-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who won the Indian Wells title in March.
“She’s so incredibly talented,” said Williams.
“She has such a great attitude. She works so hard.
“I think she can be as great as she wants to be.”
Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, more than any other player in the Open Era. She is also a former World No. 1 in women‘s singles tennis. However, she is unsure of Wimbledon‘s future.

Why is Serena wearing black on her face?
But there are a few plausible explanations. One possibility is that Serena is trying to blend in with her environment and make herself less visible to predators. Another possibility is that Serena is trying to absorb heat from the sun in order to stay warm.
