The WSL makes electric return as the other teams stutter. The Women’s Super League returned in style this weekend as Chelsea and Manchester City both stuttered to opening day defeats.
Arsenal were the big winners on the opening day, thumping Liverpool 5-1 at Meadow Park. Vivianne Miedema continued her incredible scoring record with a brace, while Beth Mead, Katie McCabe and Kim Little were also on the scoresheet.
There was also an action-packed London derby at Kingsmeadow as Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by newly promoted Brighton. The Blues had taken the lead through Fran Kirby’s early strike but were pegged back by goals from Aileen Whelan and Ini Umotong.
Manchester City also suffered an opening day defeat, going down 1-0 at home to Reading. The Royals took the lead through Fara Williams’ penalty and held on for a shock victory, despite the City having over 70% of the possession.
It was a weekend to forget about the two Manchester clubs, as both United and City lost their opening games. United were beaten 2-0 at home by West Ham, with goals from Jane Ross and Rachel Daly.
City were also beaten 2-0, this time away at newly promoted Aston Villa. The Villans took the lead through Ana Borges’ header and doubled their advantage through Chloe Arthur’s stunning strike.
There were also wins for Birmingham, Everton and Bristol City, as the WSL got off to a thrilling start.
